On the night of September 28, 2015, a mob attacked a Muslim family in Dadri, some 40 kilometres from the national capital, New Delhi. The attackers killed 52-year-old Mohammad Akhlaq Saifi and seriously injured his son, 22-year-old Danish, on the suspicion that they had stored and consumed beef in their home. The incident brought forth the communal faultlines in this largely Hindu-dominated area. The incident sparked widespread outrage in India, and was widely reported in national and international media. It sparked a wave of protests by eminent authors and artists, in which they returned government-given awards to condemn the growing atmosphere of intolerance in the country.
